Portrait of a shoe project. Addresses observation & representation, Planar Construction, 3D pattern making, laminating, organic form.

Material: Masking tape (project shown with its subject/model)

Example 7

Student work

Figure Sculpture course.

Project: 26” Figure study.

Assignments coinciding with this included to study the skeletal and muscle anatomy—from handouts, charts, and articulated skeleton in studio. Project objective was for students to improve their observation and measuring skills as demonstrated in the proportion of their clay figures. Students made their own armatures.

Oil clay over armature of aluminum wire and black pipe.

Example 8

Student work.

Sculpture: Mass course.

Figurative Mass/Partial Figure project: Assignment covered simple armature for small clay modeling, silicone caulk mold with a plaster mother mold, and lost-wax process with traditional investment. Students did their own wax work, investing, kiln loading, bronze pour, devesting, chasing & welding, and mixed and applied the patina.

About 15” tall

Carved Doubles project: Class assignment was to explore (through sketching and brainstorming) the different connotations of the word double; and then choose a specific meaning to interpret by carving a sculpture that exists in two parts.

Students choose their own materials.
